Exhibition “Renamed. Street names and the culture of remembrance in Munich after 1945”. An exhibition on the culture of remembrance, street names and dealing with the Nazi legacy
For 80 years, the main building of LMU has been located at Geschwister-Scholl-Platz 1, which, like other streets and squares in Munich, was named after members of the White Rose resistance movement. The practice of honoring victims of the Nazi regime and resistance fighters by renaming streets and squares was intended to symbolize a fresh political orientation and a break with National Socialism in Munich.
The political and societal debates about how to deal with the legacy of National Socialism, the practice of honoring victums and the culture of remembrance immediately after the end of the war are the core themes of the exhibition. Curated by LMU students under the guidance of historian Constanze Jeitler, the exhibition invites visitors to rediscover the city map as a mirror of historical debates and current struggles over interpretation.
